Turkish Students Win 3 Medals at AI Olympiad
International science olympiads have long been among the most prestigious platforms for evaluating the potential of young minds in core disciplines such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, and computer science. However, the rapid spread of data-driven technologies, machine learning models, and deep learning architectures in recent years has brought a new and strategic dimension to these competitions. The 3rd International Olympiad in Artificial Intelligence (IOAI 2026), held in Astana, Kazakhstan, stands out as a clear indicator of global competition and the high level achieved by young talents in this field. Bringing together 473 students from a total of 108 countries, the event became one of the most inclusive and widely attended gatherings in its domain.
Global AI Race and Evolving Competencies
AI-focused international competitions require a different range of expertise and disciplines compared to traditional computer science or algorithm contests. Having a basic understanding of data structures and data processing logic is no longer enough for participants. Students are also tested on their ability to clean and analyze large-scale datasets, select and train appropriate machine learning models, prevent issues like overfitting, and apply optimization techniques to practical problems. Representing 108 countries, this platform allows the most talented youth from around the world to gather under one roof and test both their theoretical and practical knowledge.
The impressive performances demonstrated at this massive event in Astana prove once again how critical it is to integrate artificial intelligence education at the secondary school level. Students who encounter these advanced algorithmic systems at an early age gain the potential to play a decisive role in future data architecture, AI ethics, and software engineering processes.
TÜBİTAK 2202 Program and Long-Term Preparation Process
The success of the team representing our country on this prestigious international platform is not the result of chance, but of a planned and systematic preparation process. The 2202 Science Olympiads program, conducted under TÜBİTAK, is one of the most established institutional frameworks enabling youth to gain deep expertise in basic sciences and innovative technologies. Training committees comprising academics from various universities and research institutions provide students with an intensive study program covering current AI methodologies alongside theoretical lessons.
Our students Teoman Ata Korkmaz, Ahmet Alp Orakçı, and Mustafa Selim Özekinci, who made our country proud by winning silver medals at the 3rd International Olympiad in Artificial Intelligence, achieved significant success as a result of this demanding and disciplined preparation marathon. The three silver medals won by the students reflect both their individual perseverance and the high quality of the national olympiad training program.
Interdisciplinary Problem-Solving Discipline
Achievements in the field of artificial intelligence reflect not only students' basic software skills but also their versatile thinking capabilities. AI applications sit right at the intersection of advanced mathematics, statistics, probability theory, linear algebra, and software architecture. Consequently, students who succeed in these olympiads acquire interdisciplinary problem-solving skills and an analytical thinking reflex as early as their high school years.
The guidance of the academic faculty involved in the training process allows students to specialize deeply in complex data structures and modern AI architectures. During these courses and training camps conducted under committee coordination, lessons go beyond theoretical knowledge to focus on modeling and contest simulations aimed at real-world problems.
Contribution of Young Talents to the Scientific and Technological Ecosystem
Young talents who achieve accolades in international olympiads hold the potential to be at the center of academic research, deep-tech startups, and innovative R&D projects in the coming years.
