Rising sea levels don’t just mean higher water at the shoreline. They bring a cascade of effects, including storm surges, coastal erosion, saltwater intrusion into freshwater sources, and infrastructure damage. Models used to assess these impacts combine historical observations, climate scenarios, and geological data.
Shortcomings of current models
A new study highlights that accelerated sea level rise observed over the past decade isn’t fully reflected in existing models. Two key reasons stand out:
