  • About 75% of the atmosphere's mass is found here

This layer lies above the troposphere and has a calmer structure.

  • The ozone layer is located here

3. Mesosphere (50 – 85 km)
It is the coldest layer of the atmosphere.

  • Temperature is very low
  • Rarely reached by human-made vehicles

4. Thermosphere (85 – 690 km)
Temperature is very high in this layer.

  • Spacecraft and some satellites are found here
  • Northern lights (Aurora) occur here
  • The International Space Station is located in this region

Helps in the transmission of radio waves and is critical for space research.

5. Exosphere (690 – 10,000 km)
It is the outermost layer of the atmosphere and is considered the transition zone to space.

Features:

  • Gas density is very low
  • Artificial satellites move here
  • Forms the boundary between atmosphere and space
