The Impact of Social Media on Children: Why It Matters
In recent years, the influence of social media platforms on children has become a serious concern for both parents and governments. The increasing amount of time spent in front of screens, disrupted sleep patterns, self-esteem issues, and cyberbullying are all supported by scientific research. This has led to the introduction of new legal regulations worldwide. It's no longer just individual measures, but a protective shield involving governments.
Children's brain development progresses at a different pace than adults. Especially during adolescence, the instant rewards and like mechanisms of social media can lead to addictive behaviors. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, social media use before the age of 13 increases the risk of attention disorders and anxiety. Therefore, age restrictions are seen not just as a ban, but as a step to support healthy development.
What's Changing Globally?
Australia is one of the pioneering countries in this area. With the law that came into effect in 2024, social media accounts of children under 16 can be closed without parental consent. Similarly, in France, a regulation adopted in 2023 made parental approval mandatory for users under 15. Canada has tightened age verification systems, requiring the verification of identity information.
The European Union's Digital Services Act (DSA) is also an important step in this direction. Platforms are required to more closely monitor content aimed at children and limit targeted advertising. In the US, some states have passed laws forcing social media platforms to change their algorithms for children. For example, in Florida, social media use is completely banned for children under 14, and parental consent is required for 15-16 year olds.
What's the Situation in Turkey?
In Turkey, regulations regarding social media use are also on the agenda. Under the Personal Data Protection Law (KVKK) enacted in 2020, parental consent is required for the processing of children's data under the age of 16. However, this regulation cannot be effective unless social media platforms implement effective age verification systems. Recently, projects aimed at increasing children's digital literacy levels have been launched in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Family and Social Services. These projects seek solutions not just through bans, but also through awareness.
However, experts point out the inadequacy of age verification systems in Turkey. Most social media platforms consider entering a birthdate sufficient for age verification, allowing children to easily create accounts by stating they are older. Therefore, stricter identity verification methods are needed.
What Can Families Do?
While legal regulations are important, the primary responsibility lies with families. Instead of completely banning social media use, providing controlled and aware access is seen as a more effective method. Experts recommend that parents discover the digital world together with their children, set screen time limits, and maintain open communication about potential risks.
- Screen time limits: Limiting daily screen time can prevent children from becoming addicted to social media.
- Joint account use: For younger age groups, it can be beneficial for parents to create accounts together with their children and monitor their shares.
- Education and awareness: Informing children about cyberbullying, personal data security, and healthy digital habits can have a protective effect in the long run.
Social media presents both opportunities and risks for children. In this rapidly evolving technological era, laws alone are not enough to protect children. The cooperation of families, educators, and platforms is necessary to make the digital world a safer place. In the future, the development of age verification systems and the establishment of global standards are expected. However, increasing children's digital literacy levels will be just as important as laws during this process.
