The massive infrastructure behind the internet, cloud storage, and artificial intelligence operates out of sight but consumes increasing amounts of resources. Water usage by data centers in the US has tripled over the last decade, exceeding 64 billion liters annually. This amount is equivalent to the yearly water needs of approximately 1.3 million people. Moreover, a significant portion of this consumption stems not directly from cooling systems but from water used during electricity generation.

Data centers serve as the heart of the digital world. Every click, video stream, and cloud storage operation increases energy and water consumption in these facilities. However, this consumption often goes unnoticed by users because water usage doesn’t appear on electricity bills or data usage reports. Behind the scenes, water is used in thermal power plants to cool systems that generate the electricity needed for data centers. This makes water consumption an indirect but massive issue.

Where Does the Water Go?

Data center water consumption can be analyzed in two main categories: direct and indirect usage. Direct consumption involves water used in cooling systems. Modern data centers require large amounts of water to prevent servers from overheating. This water typically evaporates into the atmosphere or is sent to treatment facilities.

However, the majority of water consumption is indirect. Data centers rely on the power grid to meet their energy needs, and this electricity is primarily generated by thermal power plants. These plants use vast amounts of water for cooling. Over 80% of water consumption by US data centers occurs indirectly through this process. In other words, even if data centers don’t appear to consume water directly, their energy use leaves a massive water footprint.

Environmental and Social Impacts

This surge in water consumption has serious environmental and social consequences. In regions facing water scarcity, the demand from data centers puts pressure on local resources. For example, in arid states like Arizona and Nevada, water use by data centers competes with agricultural and drinking water needs, making access to water more difficult for local communities.

Additionally, water used for cooling in thermal power plants is often drawn from rivers or lakes. This process harms aquatic ecosystems and raises water temperatures, threatening fish populations. Chemicals used during water discharge also degrade water quality, negatively impacting both biodiversity and human health.

Are Sustainable Solutions Possible?

Several strategies are being developed to reduce water consumption by data centers. The first is improving energy efficiency. Servers and cooling systems that consume less energy also reduce indirect water use. For instance, companies like Google and Microsoft use AI-powered energy management systems in their data centers to optimize water and energy consumption.

Another solution is transitioning to renewable energy sources. Unlike thermal power plants, sources like wind and solar energy do not require water for cooling. Therefore, powering data centers with renewable energy could significantly reduce water consumption. However, the intermittent nature of renewables makes this transition challenging. Advances in energy storage technologies promise to address this issue.

Finally, the location of data centers also affects water consumption. Building data centers in regions with abundant water resources could be more sustainable than in water-scarce areas. However, this must be balanced with other factors like infrastructure and energy access.

Water consumption by data centers is an invisible but growing problem in the digital world. Recognizing this issue is critical for both environmental sustainability and social equity. Technology companies and policymakers must take swift action to reduce water use. Otherwise, the conveniences of the digital age may come at the cost of depleting water resources for future generations.
