Cloudflare Expands Cache with Zstandard & Pingora
Compression Strategy and Priorities
To boost content delivery network (CDN) performance, Cloudflare chose to strengthen its data compression layer rather than relying on traditional hardware upgrades. This approach makes it possible to host more content on the same infrastructure without expanding physical server capacity. By combining the Zstandard (zstd) algorithm with its next-generation Pingora server platform in an experimental setting, the company significantly boosted cache storage efficiency.
Technical Advantages of Zstandard
Zstandard is a modern algorithm providing high compression ratios with low CPU load. Leveraging both its fast compression and decompression capabilities, Cloudflare significantly reduced the size of cached data. On repetitive datasets such as static assets, images, and frequently accessed API responses, Zstandard's adaptive compression window yielded 30%–40% more savings compared to traditional Gzip or Brotli solutions.
Contribution of the Pingora Platform
Pingora is defined by Cloudflare as its next-generation HTTP proxy and caching server platform. Its software-defined architecture maximizes CPU optimization by isolating compression operations from I/O-heavy workflows. Pingora's modular design enables the Zstandard compression layer to be dynamically enabled or rolled back as needed. This flexibility helps maintain low latency even in high-traffic regions.
