Final Excitement at TEKNOFEST Electric Vehicle Races
Future Mobility Engineers Take the Stage
The global transformation in the automotive industry is gaining momentum through carbon-neutral targets and rapid advances in battery technologies. It is crucial that this transformation takes shape not only in the R&D laboratories of industrial giants, but also in the designs of young talents trained in high school and university lecture halls. The International Electric Vehicle Races, organized under the coordination of the TÜBİTAK Science and Society Department (BİTO) and the technical execution of the TÜBİTAK Rail Transport Technologies Institute (RUTE), have become one of the most concrete reflections of this vision in the field. With the completion of the Technical Approval Video stage in the TEKNOFEST competition, the official announcement of the finalist teams demonstrates that projects are transitioning from a theoretical level to the real production and testing phase.
The technical approval process functions as a critical filter where vehicles featuring running gear, a functional electrical architecture, and safety standards are distinguished beyond mere ideas or drawings. At this stage, the validity of months of workshop efforts and engineering calculations is certified by independent experts.
Electromobile and Hydromobile: Two Different Visions of Sustainability
Designing the races in two main categories, Electromobile and Hydromobile, offers a holistic approach to the alternative fuel technologies of the future. Focusing entirely on battery electric vehicle technologies, the Electromobile track measures students' mastery over battery management systems (BMS), motor drivers, efficient power transmission components, and embedded software. In this category, where energy efficiency is prioritized, every watt-hour of energy consumed must be managed with great engineering precision.
On the other hand, the Hydromobile category requires a much more complex system integration by introducing hydrogen fuel cell technology into the equation. Safely storing hydrogen on the vehicle, converting it into electricity in the fuel cell, and transferring it to the wheels via hybrid power systems directly confront participants with the most challenging problems the automotive world will need to solve in the coming years. Teams competing in this category lay the foundation for a qualified engineering infrastructure that will play a role in the future hydrogen economy.
The Role of Technical Approval in Systems Engineering
Technical approval videos, which hold a critical place in the competition schedule, require participants to prove not only the final product but also their product development discipline. In these videos, meticulously examined by TÜBİTAK RUTE experts, the following elements stand out:
- System Safety and Isolation: Safety of high-voltage lines, emergency circuit breakers, and compliance of mechanical brake systems with standards.
- Originality and Indigenous Design: Development of the vehicle chassis, aerodynamic shell, and electronic control units through original engineering solutions.
- Telemetry and Data Tracking: Real-time transmission of vehicle data to the ground station and remote monitoring of driver safety.
Meeting these standards provides competitors with hands-on experience in industrial-grade project management and validation.
Strategic Value for Türkiye and the Region
The participant profile, spanning countries like Azerbaijan and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus alongside Türkiye, confirms that the event is an international center of attraction for talent. High school students acquiring an interdisciplinary working culture at an early age, along with undergraduate students producing practical solutions to complex engineering problems, directly feeds the region's technology ecosystem.
Considering Türkiye's domestic automobile production and mobility ecosystem, it becomes clearer how critical a resource the talent raised in these competitions is for the industry. Gaining practical experience in various fields ranging from chassis design to battery packaging, in-vehicle communication protocols, and motor driver algorithms, these young individuals form the natural talent pool for automotive and defense industry companies after graduation.
Conclusion and the Track Battle
The simulation and testing phase is now behind the finalist teams that passed the technical approval stage. Now comes the main races where the limits of the designed and manufactured vehicles will be tested under track conditions. The core philosophy of the race being not to reach the highest speed, but to complete the specified distance with the lowest energy consumption, aligns perfectly with the eco-friendly and sustainable transportation vision of the future. This process, where engineering intellect combines with the skill of managing energy effectively, will continue to serve as a major milestone in Türkiye's technology-focused development goals.
