Rapid and uncontrolled urbanization has transformed modern cities into areas dominated by gray concrete blocks and dense asphalt pavements. This physical transformation not only alters city skylines but also negatively impacts various areas ranging from local microclimates and biodiversity to human health and social bonds. Right at this point, urban green spaces such as parks, urban forests, groves, green corridors, and roof gardens emerge not as luxury landscape elements, but as essential infrastructure needs for urban sustainability.

Considered extensions of ecological systems within the city, these areas bring free ecosystem services offered by nature directly into urban centers. Spanning from rainwater absorption to air quality improvement, this process makes cities far more resilient against environmental disasters and the impacts of the climate crisis.

A Natural Shield Against the Climate Crisis: Mitigating the Heat Island Effect

Because buildings, asphalt, and dark surfaces retain heat, urban centers reach significantly higher temperatures compared to their surrounding rural areas. This phenomenon is known as the urban heat island effect. When extreme heatwaves occur during summer months, this effect turns into a serious health risk for city residents.

Quality afforestation and expansive grassy areas significantly lower ambient temperatures thanks to transpiration through leaves (evapotranspiration) and the shading they provide. The canopy layer created by treetops prevents surfaces from being exposed to direct sunlight, while water evaporating from leaves cools the surrounding air. Furthermore, these areas function as carbon sinks, balancing urban greenhouse gas concentrations.

The Cornerstone of Physical and Mental Health

The benefits offered by urban green spaces are not limited to the ecological dimension. Chronic stress, noise pollution, and sedentary lifestyles brought by urban living directly threaten public health. Research shows that regular contact with nature has healing effects on human biology and psychology.

  • Improvement in Air Quality: Trees and plants filter suspended particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) and harmful gases like nitrogen dioxide, reducing the risk of respiratory diseases.
  • Relieving Mental Fatigue: The presence of greenery lowers levels of stress hormones like cortisol, enhances concentration, and provides mental restoration.
  • Encouraging Physical Activity: Walking paths, bicycle tracks, and outdoor sports areas play an active role in combating obesity and cardiovascular diseases.

Urbanization Experience in Turkey and Green Space Standards

In Turkey, internal migration and the construction-driven growth model, which accelerated particularly after 1980, have put severe pressure on the amount of green space in major cities. Although the standard per capita green space requirement in Turkey is set at 15 square meters according to the Regulation on Spatial Plan Preparation, this figure unfortunately drops to 1–3 square meters in many central districts of metropolises like Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir.

Conversely, positive changes in the approach to green infrastructure have been observed in recent years. Efforts to protect areas such as Validebağ Grove and Atatürk Urban Forest in Istanbul, the ecological value of Kültürpark in Izmir, and the extensive urban forests in Bursa clearly demonstrate how vital nature is within the urban fabric. Additionally, practices such as rain gardens, which retain rainwater and act as natural filters, along with urban community gardens, are increasingly finding a place on local government agendas.

What Makes a High-Quality Green Space?

Simply covering an area with grass does not make it a functional urban green space. To deliver meaningful benefits, the following criteria must be considered:

  • Accessibility: Green spaces should be within walking distance (about 10–15 minutes) for urban residents and designed to be barrier-free.
  • Native Plant Species: Native tree and shrub species suited to the regional climate with low water requirements should be preferred to conserve water resources.
  • Supporting Biodiversity: They should provide a habitat corridor not just for human use, but also for birds, insects, and microorganisms.

Holistic Planning and a Sustainable Future

Developing urban green spaces requires a holistic green infrastructure planning approach rather than simply building fragmented parks. All parks large and small, riverbanks, roadside tree plantings, and biological corridors within the city should be interconnected. This seamless network supports urban biodiversity while keeping the city's microclimatic structure in balance.

In the cities of the future, green spaces must be placed at the center of climate change adaptation strategies. Creating permeable surfaces to counter flood risks caused by concrete construction, greening roofs, and strictly protecting existing tree canopy through legislation are not merely environmental choices, but vital necessities.

Cities of Nature, Not Concrete

In conclusion, urban green spaces are not urban ornaments, but the lungs and defense mechanisms of cities. If we wish to build livable, healthy, and climate-resilient cities, we must shift the priority given to concrete in planning processes back to nature. Abandoning the mindset that pits cities against nature to design cities in harmony with it is the most valuable legacy we can leave for future generations.
